Kenny And Nguyen Honored At Chancellor's Awards

Two Tar Heel student-athletes – Jackie Kenny and Bryana Nguyen – were among those honored at the 2018 Chancellor's Awards, held on April 24 in the Great Hall in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union.
Kenny, a senior on the rowing team, was awarded the Louis D. Rubin, Jr. Prize in Creative Writing, which is presented annually to the outstanding fiction writer in the senior class and is selected by faculty members in the Creative Writing Program. She is from Castle Rock, Colo., and was also recognized recently as one of UNC's Top 10 Scholar-Athletes, those seniors with the highest grade point averages.
Nguyen, a senior on the women's golf team, received the Jim Tatum Memorial Award, which goes to the varsity athlete who has performed with distinction in his or her sport and who has contributed to the University community through constructive participation in co-curricular activities. She is from Columbia, Md., and serves as co-president of UNC's Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
"It was the greatest honor to get the award from Chancellor Folt and to meet her and have a conversation with her," Nguyen said. "It was a humbling experience.
"As a senior, I just wanted to take everything in and fulfill the whole Carolina experience and I think that's excelling in the classroom, service and with golf. It's been four years of hard work and it's great to see that it's paid off. I've had an amazing experience here."
The annual Chancellor's Awards Ceremony recognizes outstanding students for their achievements in academic endeavors — in the humanities, the sciences and social sciences — as well as their exceptional leadership through involvement in residential and Greek life, student self-governance, and many other areas. The Chancellor's Awards Ceremony, the only campus-wide student recognition program at Carolina.
