September 21, 2018 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – Despite out-digging the Irish, North Carolina dropped the ACC opener to Notre Dame in straight sets Friday evening at home. Led by double-digit digs from Greer Moseman and Mia Fradenburg, the Tar Heels posted 44 digs over the Irish's 39.
Moseman's 11 digs tied a single-match career high while Fradenburg posted 10. Hunter Atherton set 31 of UNC's 37 kills, which were led by 12 from Destiny Cox. Coming off the bench, both Madison Laufenberg and Skylar Wine hit over .300 with seven and nine kills apiece. Notre Dame's Jemma Yeadon and Sydney Bent slugged 15 and 14 kills, respectively.
After the first ACC match of the season, the Tar Heels fall to 4-6 on the season while Notre Dame improves to 7-4. With the loss, Notre Dame snapped a 26-match home ACC winning streak that dated back to Oct. 16, 2015.
Notre Dame scored the first seven points before Atherton connected with Cox for the first UNC kill. Holding the Irish's score at 23, UNC went on a 3-0 run with a kill by Ava Bell. However, attacking at a .464 clip, Notre Dame earned a commanding 25-11 set one victory.
Carolina turned it around in set two, battling point-for-point with the Irish. Neither team led by more than one until the 10-12 mark in favor of the visitors. The Tar Heels went on a 3-0 run coming out of the media timeout thanks to a Carolina block and kill each by Cox and Wine. The Irish answered back with a run of their own to take a 20-16 lead and force a Carolina timeout. Despite Laufenberg's perfect 4-for-7 performance in the set, Notre Dame took the frame, 25-20.
UNC led early on in set three, but Notre Dame knotted the frame at 10-all. With Cox's 10th kill and the Tar Heels on a 5-1 run, the Irish called a timeout. Even with six kills by both Wine and Cox in the frame, Notre Dame clinched the three-set win, 25-22.
The Tar Heels face Louisville Sunday at 1 p.m. and wrap up its home stand Wednesday, hosting NC State at 6:30 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
