Tar Heels Finish 11th at Prestigious Head of the Charles
October 19, 2019 | Women's Rowing
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – North Carolina opened the fall 2019 season at the Head of the Charles Regatta, placing 11th in the women's club eights on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.
Â
"It was exciting to get our season started with the Head of the Charles," head coach Sarah Haney said. "It is quite a spectacle and quite an event. We're really proud that we can offer this opportunity to our student-athletes who've worked hard and met our fitness and off-season training goals. The Head of the Charles is one of the largest spectator event of all college athletics. To have over 400,000 fans watching our sport and it being such a big deal in the city of Boston is fantastic."
Â
Senior coxswain Sofia Triana guided senior Julianne Peters, sophomore Alessandra De Vito, senior Melanie Hussey, junior Lauren Ferner, senior Elizabeth Mitchell, senior Caleigh Sewell, senior Katie Bell and senior Sally Stanley down the 4,800-meter Charles River course in 17:17.285.
Â
The Tar Heels originally finished 12th before one team was disqualified. Carolina placed ninth of NCAA collegiate teams.
Â
"We raced well and we learned a lot since it's our first race of the season. We'll be able to take what we've learned into next weekend at Princeton. We were able to get some of the first-race jitters out. Everything we're doing is to push to be the best we can be in our spring season. We're working on laying the foundation and getting in the miles. We're excited about where we can go from here."
Â
Carolina continues its fall schedule at the Princeton Chase on Oct. 27 and wraps up fall racing at the Head of the Hooch Nov. 7 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Â
First held on October 16, 1965, the Head Of The Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event. Over the past 55Â years, the Head Of The Charles Regatta has grown to more than 11,000 athletes from around the world competing in 61 different race events. In 1997, the Regatta grew to a two-day event and now attracts up to 400,000 spectators during race weekend in October.
