Tar Heels Compete At Rainy Princeton Chase
October 27, 2019 | Women's Rowing
PRINCETON, N.J. – Racing eight different combinations down Lake Carnegie, the Tar Heels wrapped up the Princeton Chase on a rainy Sunday morning in Princeton, N.J.
Â
"Our team handled the day well," head coach Sarah Haney said. "It poured down rain all day, our cox boxes stopped working due to the heavy rain but we kept rolling strong. We made switches between the two pieces and everyone continued to have the mentality of making their boat that fastest it can be, no matter what boat and what seat they were in."
Â
In the morning session, the Crosswinds was first to finish for Carolina coming in 24th of 47 while Wonda, Folt and Spirit followed suit in 31st, 39th and 42nd, respectively. Junior coxswain Ashley Lim led senior Melanie Hussey, junior Sally Stanley, senior Julianne Peters, junior Lauren Ferner, senior Elizabeth Mitchell, senior Caleigh Sewell, senior Katie Bell and sophomore Alessandra De Vito down the course in the Crosswinds in 16:22:148. In the final race, the Wonda crossed the line first for Carolina in 12th of 28, followed by Crosswinds, Spirit and Folt, placing 17th, 25th and 27th respectively. Sophomore coxswain Lara King led junior Katie McMahon, freshman Ranait Fitzgerald, freshman Natalie Timinskas, senior Bridget Tarnowski, senior Elizabeth Mitchell, senior Caleigh Sewell, senior Abby Hudspeth and sophomore Sarah Catherine Niles down the course in the Wonda in 17:02.378.
Â
"Today was all about our team, not any one single boat," Haney said. "We have all worked together each day, primarily in mixed lineups, to work on being the best we can be and making the boat you are in the fastest it can possibly be on that stroke, on that day. Â We used this weekend as a chance to get as many people down the race course as possible which is, and will be, a tremendous value for us depth wise."
Â
The Tar Heels conclude their fall season Saturday at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Â
"This team is moving along very well," Haney said. "They are positive, they work hard and they support one another. There is much to accomplish this year and it is all possible when you have this type of team chemistry."
