Carolina and Campbell Battle To 1-1 Draw In Buies Creek

Buies Creek, N.C. – On a wet, foggy night in Buies Creek, North Carolina and Campbell battled to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of soccer. Campbell struck first in the 20th minute before Alex Rose recorded his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 23rd minute. It In a game which saw five yellow cards and 30 fouls, the Tar Heels only conceded two shots on goal all night and had several close calls to win the game at the end of regulation and extra time.
The first half in Buies Creek was an interesting one to say the least. As the fog and mud enveloped the field, the Tar Heels came out of the gates flying on offense as they registered two shots and three corners within the first 13 minutes.
Campbell responded with its first quality look on goal in the 15th minute after they drew a foul right outside the box. In a dangerous position, the Camels forward stepped up to the ball but it sailed high and wide of the goal.
Just five minutes later Campbell took a 1-0 lead as Bissai Campbe Dotte headed home a corner kick to give the Camels an early edge in the 20th minute. The ball was lofted in to the box, Dotte headed the ball to the ground and it skipped through the legs of Jack Skahan and past Mark Salas as it clipped in the inside of the post and in to the back of the net.
Alex Rose wasted no time in tying the game as he scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 23rd minute to make it 1-1. Skahan received the ball on the near sideline and played a perfect ball through the box to Rose who struck it first time. The ball slid on the wet ground to the Campbell keeper as he dove down to save it. He made the initial save, but the ball bounced off his body and spun slowly over the end line to tie the game.
Over the next 20 minutes both teams had several quality chances, considering the conditions, as UNC went in to the break leading Campbell 6-4 on shots and 5-2 on corner kicks.
The second half started slowly as both teams only combined for one shot on goal through the first 30 minutes. After that, the game opened up as the Heels pressed hard for the game-winner.
In the 77th minute the Heels looked destined to take the lead after the two shots from inside the box from Jelani Pieters and Jonathan Jimenez. Pieters slipped on his shot, but the ball bounced to Jimenez who was denied from point blank range.
In the 85th minute, UNC had a free kick from 25 yards out, but the wall did its job and blocked the shot. With minutes remaining in regulation, things got chippy as both teams clawed for loose balls.
The Camels went down to 10 players in the 87th minute after Thibaut Jacquel picked up his second yellow card of the night. With the man advantage, the Tar Heels drew a late foul in the 90th minute with 17 seconds left. The ref never stopped the clock as time ran out of regulation before the Heel could set up the last second shot.
In extra time, the Tar Heels looked to seal the game with a winner in the 94th minute, but a hand ball was called in the box on Raul Aguilera that discounted the goal. Rose looked like he was going to end it in the 97th minute with a beautiful counter attack. But as he beat the keeper and tried to slot the ball in to the back of the net, Campbell's last defender cleared the ball off the line to keep the game alive.
In the second extra time, Milo Garvanian looked to have the game winner in the 108th minute, but his shot rolled inches wide of the post. After 110 minutes the Tar Heels and Camels played to a hard fought 1-1 tie.
UNC out shot Campbell 18-7 overall and 6-2 in shots on goal throughout the 110 minutes.
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Friday night as they host Louisville at 6 p.m. for senior night.
