Tar Heels Host BC With ACC Regular-Season Title On The Line
October 24, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team hosts No. 13 Boston College Friday with the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship on the line. Game time at Karen Shelton Stadium is 5 p.m. and there is no charge for admission.
The first 200 fans to arrive will receive a free popcorn and drink. The first 100 UNC students will get pizza.
"Our fans are such an important part of why our home field is so special to us," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We hope we can get a great crowd out for what has become a crucial game in our season."
The Tar Heels come into the game 14-0 overall and 5-0 the ACC with just this game remaining in conference play. BC, which is 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, is the only conference team with just one loss, thus the only opponent that could knock UNC out of the top spot in the standings.
The winner of the regular-season title gets the top seed and a first-round bye in the ACC Championship, coming up Nov. 7, 8 and 10 in Newton, Mass. UNC is the two-time defending champion, having won in 2017 and 2018.
Carolina comes into Friday's game riding a 37-game winning streak, which includes a 6-0 mark in ACC play last season. The Tar Heels have put together back-to-back undefeated ACC seasons before, but not since the league expansion to six conference games The Tar Heels went 5-0 in 2011 and 2012, before Syracuse joined in 2013.
UNC will be without its top scorer for this weekend's games (Boston College on Friday and Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m.) as well as the Nov. 3 game against Saint Joseph's. Sophomore forward Erin Matson, a member of the U.S. National Team, is traveling to India to represent the U.S. in a two-game Olympic Qualifier on Nov. 1 and 2. For more on the qualifier, click here. Matson is one of five Tar Heels on the roster. She joins four alums – Ashley Hoffman, Lauren Moyer, Caitlin Van Sickle and Julia Young – as they head off to represent the U.S.
Matson will be back with the Carolina team in time for the ACC Tournament.
