Carolina hosts Virginia Tech Sunday on Senior Day.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Spectacular second half goals by Ru Mucherera and Brianna Pinto powered the third-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over fifth-ranked Florida State before a crowd of 3,021 fans at Dorrance Field Thursday night.
With the victory over the Seminoles, the Tar Heels improved to 14-1-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the ACC. The defending national champion Seminoles are now 12-4 on the season and 6-2 in the ACC. With two games remaining in the regular season, Carolina now holds a solid lead in the league standings with 22 points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie). Virginia and Florida State are now tied for second in the conference rankings with 18 points.
The Tar Heels hit a cross bar and a post in the first half of play and another post less than three minutes into the second half before scoring a pair of goals less than seven minutes apart late in the second half of play.
It was redshirt senior Ru Mucherera who put the Tar Heels ahead at 75:30 with a breakaway goal off a crazy game of ping pong in the Tar Heel defensive end. Emily Fox sent a back pass to Claudia Dickey but her clearance was intercepted by a Florida State attacking player whose heavy touch went directly to Carolina defender Lotte Wubben-Moy just yards in front of the penalty area. The junior English defender one-touched a long pass on a line drive over the defensive line of Florida State where Mucherera ran on to the ball, splitting FSU defenders in the process and charged into the box where she finished a low liner just off the right post and into the goal past a charging Seminole goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers.
The goal was the sixth of Mucherera's career and her second career tally against Florida State. She also scored against the Seminoles in the championship game of the 2018 ACC Tournament. It was Mucherera's third goal this season.
UNC doubled its lead less than seven minutes later when Brianna Pinto intercepted a pass at midfield and dribbled 45 yards for a one-on-one breakaway, finishing past Jeffers inside the right goal post for a 2-0 Tar Heel lead at 82:19. It was Pinto's team-leading ninth goal of the campaign.
Carolina had two excellent scoring chances in the first half of the game. Pinto's shot from the top of the penalty area was denied by the cross bar at 12:41 of the match, bouncing straight down and out of danger. Seventeen minutes into the match, FSU had its best opportunity of the night with Yujie Zhao finding herself wide open on the left side of the box only to see her shot careen wide of the right post by a foot. Carolina had another great chance to score at 19:19 as Maycee Bell snuck completely behind the Florida State defensive line to take a long pass in stride only to see her header clang off the right post, skip behind Jeffers and hug the goal line without finding its way across.
The Tar Heels finished with a 5-2 shot edge in the first half and there was only one save in the first half and it came from Jeffers who saved a shot by Isabel Cox.
The game was much more wide open in the second half with end-to-end action exciting the boisterous crowd in attendance. FSU actually outshot the Tar Heels 12-6 in the second half but many of the FSU shots came from distance after Carolina had taken the lead. Claudia Dickey played the second half in goal for Carolina after Marz Josephson had played the first half. Dickey made six second half saves to set a career game high. Her previous high for saves in a game came with four each in her freshman year against Texas on August 22, 2018 and against Notre Dame on October 4, 2018.
Carolina will be back in action on Sunday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Virginia Tech at Dorrance Field. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU. It will mark the final regular season home game for six Tar Heel seniors – Ru Mucherera, Morgan Goff, Bridgette Andrzejewski, Zoe Redei, Madison Schultz and Kasey Parker.
