Carolina Clinches ACC Regular Season Title With Win Over Hokies
October 27, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Redei scores game-winning goal on Senior Day.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The third-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team secured its 23rd Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory against 25th-ranked Virginia Tech before 2,113 fans at Dorrance Field.
Senior Zoe Redei scored the game-winning goal for the Tar Heels in the 43rd minute and Carolina benefitted from an own goal to put the game away in the 87th minute of play.
Redei was one of six Tar Heel players honored in the pregame on Senior Day at Dorrance Field, joining Ru Mucherera, Morgan Goff, Bridgette Andrzejewski, Madison Schultz and Kasey Parker in pregame festivities. The game-winning goal was the 11th overall goal of Redei's career and the sixth time she has scored a game-winner for the Tar Heels.
UNC did not concede a goal in ACC play for the eighth time in nine games this season. Pittsburgh is the only team that has scored on the Tar Heels in league play. Carolina has outscored teams 43-5 overall this season.
Carolina outshot the Hokies 15-3 in the match but did concede seven corner kicks to the Hokies while Carolina took three in the match. Mandy McGlynn made six saves in the match including a spectacular stop on a dangerous shot by Rachel Jones with 13:26 gone in the first half. A little over a minute later the Tar Heels almost broke out on top but Alessia Russo's shot from the left side of the penalty area slid past McGlynn only to be denied by the right post.
The Tar Heels would eventually take the lead at 42:09 on Redei's world class strike from the top of the box on the left side. Goalkeeper Marz Josephson cleared a ball upfield to a defender who sent the ball on to Redei. The senior striker from Illinois took it in with her back to the goal, danced around her defenders for a split second and eventually found enough space to launch a shot with pace with her right foot that hit the underside of the cross bar and bounced down and into the goal for the eventual game-winner.
Carolina outshot the Hokies 9-1 in the first half and 6-2 in the second half for an overall differential of 15-3. Virginia Tech's best chance came a little less than four minutes into the second half when Lilly Weber found herself open in the box around 15 yards out but she sent her strike just wide of the left post. Twelve UNC fouls and seven corner kicks allowed the Hokies to stay dangerous on set pieces before UNC was able to notch a tally for separation. Taylor Otto sprung Isabel Cox free with a through ball down the left side. Cox dribbled into the penalty area where McGlynn came out to cut down her angle. Cox's shot looked destined to go wide of the right post but a Virginia Tech defender hustling on the play made contact as she tried to clear it and the ball was redirected into the center part of the goal for a defensive own goal and the 2-0 lead the Tar Heels needed to shut down the game.
Josephson and Claudia Dickey shared Carolina's 14th shutout of the season in 17 games and the eighth clean sheet for Carolina in nine ACC games.
The Tar Heels close out the regular season with a 7:30 p.m. game at Miami on Halloween night this Thursday at Cobb Field in Coral Gables, Fla. The game will be nationally televised on the Atlantic Coast Conference's Regional Sports Network (ACC RSN) which is Fox Sports Carolina in the state of North Carolina.
With the win UNC improved to 15-1-1 overall this campaign and 8-0-1 in the ACC. Virginia Tech, which was perfect in the non-conference phase of its season, is 11-4-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the ACC.
