Howell Named ACC Player/Rookie Of The Week
October 7, 2019 | Football
GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Sam Howell has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterback and rookie of the week after a record-setting performance last Saturday in the win at Georgia Tech.
Howell, a native of Indian Trail, N.C., set UNC freshman records for completions (33), attempts (51) and yards (376). His four touchdown passes tied the rookie record set by Darian Durant in 2001 in the 38-22 victory on the road against the Yellow Jackets.
Howell's 376 yards passing were the 14th most in a single game at Carolina and the most by a Tar Heel signal caller since Mitch Trubisky went for 439 yards against Florida State in 2016.
The 51 pass attempts are the third most in program history, while Howell's 33 completions are tied for fourth all-time in a single game.
Howell, who earned both awards after the week one victory over South Carolina, leads the ACC with 15 touchdowns and 1,544 passing yards.
Also announced today, Carolina (3-3, 2-1 ACC) will visit Virginia Tech (3-2, 1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 19 for a 3:30 pm ET kickoff on the Regional Sports Network.
