Tar Heels Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker to Georgia Tech

CHAPEL HILL – Despite three Tar Heels with double-digit kills, the Tar Heels dropped a five set match to Georgia Tech Friday night in Carmichael Arena.
After winning the first set and battling through 35 tie scores and 16 lead changes throughout the match, UNC came back from its biggest deficit in the third set, down 10-19. However, the Tar Heels were unable to complete the comeback, falling in the fifth, 11-15. Carolina handed the Yellow Jackets their first set loss since Oct. 6.
Lauren Harrison led Carolina with 21 kills while Parker Austin and Skylar Wine added 15 and 12, respectively. Hunter Atherton posted her first double-double of the season with 39 assists and 11 digs while both Karenna Wurl and Ryan Shannon set single-match career-bests with 18 and 10 digs, respectively. Georgia Tech spread its offense among five who each tallied double-figure kills, led by Mikaila Dowd's 19. Out-blocking Georgia Tech 12.5 to 7.0, Carolina slides to 10-11, 7-4 in the ACC while the Yellow Jackets improve to 15-7, 8-3 in conference play.
The Tar Heels began the match with two kills by Wine. Back-to-back service errors by both teams tied the score at 7-7, but the Tar Heels fought back with a kill by Austin. Although Georgia Tech pulled ahead due to errors by UNC, another kill by Austin put the Tar Heels back on track. Georgia Tech led by one at the media timeout. However, a three point run with kills by Harrison and Aristea Tontai put UNC in the lead and forced another timeout for Georgia Tech. A powerful final kill by Harrison earned UNC the first set win, 25-23.
With the Tar Heels looking to extend their lead, Carolina and Georgia Tech battled point-for-point early in the second set. Austin gave the Tar Heels their first lead in the set, 10-9. An error by Georgia Tech extended UNC's four-point run, but the Yellow Jackets managed to tie up again 17-17 and force a Carolina timeout. The Tar Heels fought back with a kill by Wine, but the Yellow Jackets took the second set 25-21.
Despite early momentum by Georgia Tech, Carolina fought back from a nine-point deficit to win the third set, 25-23. Georgia Tech jumped to an early 7-2 lead before extending it to 19-10 thanks to five kills from Dowd. However, the Tar Heels fought back with kills by Harrison and Wine, helping close the nine-point Georgia Tech lead to two. Carolina regained the lead 23-22 with a trio of Georgia Tech errors. The Tar Heels completed the comeback with a final kill by Wine for the 25-23 win.
Looking to close out the match with a final set, the Tar Heels came out with high energy. Carolina earned the first point on a kill by Harrison and maintained the energy to keep the lead at the 10-9 mark. However, the Yellow Jackets managed to pull ahead with a seven-point run. The Tar Heels responded with kills by Tontai and Harrison to bring the set within one, 18-17, as Harrison totaled eight kills in the frame. Despite their efforts and an ace by Tontai, the Tar Heels could not regain the lead as Georgia Tech took the fourth set 25-20.

Georgia Tech pulled ahead at the 9-7 mark, but Carolina fought back with a block by Wine and Tontai. Following back-to-back kills for the Yellow Jackets, UNC called time to dampen their momentum. The Tar Heels battled through one set point on Harrison's 21st kill, but Georgia Tech closed out the set, 15-11, for the win.
