
Tar Heels Sweep Wake Forest in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Picking up their fourth-straight Sunday sweep, the Tar Heels defeated Wake Forest in straight sets in Reynolds Gym to improve to 10-4 in ACC play, 13-11 overall.
Despite early leads by the Demon Deacons in the first two sets, North Carolina prevailed for the win in each frame, limiting Wake Forest to a .149 hitting percentage throughout the match. Parker Austin led Carolina with 13 kills while Skyy Howard posted a match-best .545 clip. Returning to action, Mia Fradenburg paced the back row with 16 digs and two aces.
Wake Forest's Caitlyn Della led all hitters with 14 kills, but it was not enough to propel the Deacons to victory. Wake Forest slides to 11-14, 1-13 in conference.
How It Happened
Despite Wake Forest earning the first points, Austin posted two kills put Carolina on the board. After trading points through the 7-7 mark, the Tar Heels went on a 5-1 run as the Deacons called time. Karenna Wurl posted UNC's first ace coming out of the break. However a kill and block by Olivia Saunders set up a Wake Forest 3-0 run before Destiny Cox broke it up with a kill. The Demon Deacons came within one but Lauren Harrison's second and third kills extended the Tar Heels' lead. Smooth passes from Hunter Atherton to Austin clinched the final three points for UNC, taking the first set, 25-19.
Keeping the second set close at the start, a successful challenge by Wake Forest overturned a UNC point to knot the set at 5-all. Carolina reclaimed the lead on back-to-back kills by Skylar Wine from Annabelle Archer. The Deacons went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 15-all before a pair of errors and kill by Cox reclaimed a the lead for Carolina and forced a Wake Forest timeout. Following Austin's ninth kill and a Deacon miscue, Wake Forest used its second timeout with Carolina lead 21-18. A successful UNC challenge clinched the set, 25-20, as Austin picked up her 10th kill.
A Fradenburg ace and two kills by Cox set the tone early in the third set as Wake Forest called time with a 4-0 UNC lead. The Demon Deacons nearly tied the frame but Howard's fifth kill maintained a two-point edge. Fradenburg's second ace of the set pushed the Tar Heels' lead to four. Wake Forest battled through two match points before Howard secured the 25-21 win.
