Tar Heels Take on Seminoles in Sunshine State

CHAPEL HILL –  Winning six of the past seven matches, North Carolina travels to the Sunshine State to take on Florida State in a battle between two second-ranked teams in the ACC on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Recently for the Tar Heels (13-11, 10-4 ACC)
Out-blocking 11 of 14 conference opponents, the Tar Heels rank second in conference play in total blocks and blocks per set behind Florida State. Aristea Tontai leads UNC with 1.30 blocks per set while Skyy Howard owns 100 total blocks.

Despite dropping the first set, North Carolina stormed back for the 3-1 win over Duke on Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Tar Heels wrapped up the weekend with a decisive three-set win at Wake Forest for their fourth-straight Sunday sweep.

After dropping the first set at Duke, the Tar Heels responded to win the following three sets thanks to Carolina's back row, posting 77 digs spread among Karenna Wurl, Hunter Atherton, Parker Austin and Greer Moseman each with double-digit digs. Offensively, Lauren Harrison, Destiny Cox and Austin tallied double-digit kills with 19, 11Â and 10, respectively.

The Tar Heels' 77 digs vs. Duke were the most since UNC had 85 vs. UCLA on Dec. 9, 2016. It was the most in an ACC match for Carolina since Oct. 14, 2016 vs. Notre Dame with 107 digs.

Battling back from a two-set deficit on Oct. 13, North Carolina came from behind to upset then-ranked No. 23 Florida State, 3-2, in Carmichael Arena for the Tar Heels' first win over a ranked opponent since 2016.

The first set featured 14 tie scores FSU earned a narrow win before picking up momentum to take a two-set advantage at the intermission. However, the Tar Heels bounced back in the third to defeat the Seminoles in back-to-back sets, knotting up the match 2-2. Carolina's attack continued, taking the set, 15-10, for the upset victory.
