Tar Heels Complete Fall Season at Weather-Shortened Head of the Hooch
November 2, 2019 | Women's Rowing
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Following a two-hour fog delay, North Carolina raced five boats between the varsity and novice events at the Head of the Hooch on Saturday afternoon in Chattanooga, Tenn.
"Our focus for the fall was to work on making the entire team faster as a whole- just make whatever boat you are in as fast as you can," head coach Sarah Haney said. "It wasn't about what boat you were in. We constantly made lineup changes throughout the season to give as many people as many different opportunities as possible. We believe in the growth of the team and know that how we competed this fall will ensure a faster spring as we work on laying the foundation and development of the team."
Beginning the day for UNC, Carolina competed three boats in the championship 8+ event. Leading the Tar Heels, Sofia Triana navigated Taylor Gregitis, Elizabeth Mitchell, Ranait Fitzgerald, Natalie Timinskas, Bridget Tarnowski, Amanda Perez, Sarah Cate Niles and Abigail Hudspeth to a seventh place finish in 15:46.153 behind ACC opponent, Louisville. Carolina's second and third boats finished 11th and 13th, respectively, of 13 shells.
"Each week we made progress against some tough competition," Haney said. "We had a good schedule that allowed us to see a variety of different schools with a high level of speed to help us prepare for the upcoming spring."
Carolina's first novice boat earned the highest finish for the Tar Heels, placing third in the college & club novice 8+ event. Claire Traylor guided Emma Brockman, Jessica Judge, Hannah Davis, Kate Burgess, Tianna Van Cura, Nicole Van Liew, Jackie Wilhelm and Meagan Harrington to a third place finish behind Alabama and Eastern Michigan in 17:33.762. The Tar Heels' second novice 8+ crossed the line ninth of 28 boats to wrap up the day for Carolina.
"We are thrilled to have some of our newest members of our team represent Carolina for the first time today," Haney said. "It was great to see them come together throughout the fall and then put all of their hard work into action down the race course."
The varsity 4+ event was cancelled due to the delayed start to the day. Carolina begins the 2020 season at the Carolina Cup vs. Clemson and Duke on Saturday, March 7 in Clemson, South Carolina.
