Post Game Quotes
Head Coach Roy Williams
Opening Statement
"Cole [Anthony] was pretty impressive in the second half. I jumped on him and Christian [Keeling] in the first half because he had two turnovers and Christian had four. Christian never really got in the flow of the game, but I think he's going to be fine. Garrison [Brooks], 10 [points] and nine [rebounds] – I think we need to get more out of him than that, but basically in the second half it was Cole Anthony. I used to sit here sometimes and say Tyler Hansbrough carried us. Well, Cole carried us tonight. We cannot depend on him being the only guy that's tough enough to get a rebound, tough enough to make a shot, but that was pretty impressive to say the least. I think that was the first time I've ever played just seven guys. Huff [Brandon Huffman] had a minute and seven [seconds], Walker [Miller] had 14 seconds. I think that was the first time I've ever played that limited number of people in my career which has been a long, long time. I must be getting really cocky because I came out of the locker room and I handed my drink to the athletic director and told him to hold it, so I must be getting really cocky."
On how to stop Cole Anthony from playing too many minutes
"Take him out… we play a 30-40 game season. I'm not going to have a guy wearing out early in the year. I see a lot of kids in college basketball. I don't believe in this 'load management' junk that you hear about in the NBA. Pay me $25 million a year or something like that and my load's always going to be pretty light. But I do believe you've got to rest some players during the course of the game and during some times in practice. We've done that even with Cole [Anthony]. We've had him sit some of the practice sessions. Leaky [Black] up until even this week was limited time wise in practice. Andrew's [Platek] been limited. He's good defensively, too. He didn't have the defensive game today that he does sometimes, but he's good defensively too guys."
On Garrison Brooks defending John Mooney
"Garrison [Brooks] is our best defender so when [John] Mooney was in the game… we tried to get him to guard him. Garrison didn't have a great game, but I mean it's how simple the game is guys. Every day in practice from our entire career – 32 years, 12 million games – we start practice with simple fast break drills. Everybody gets in the middle, you come to stop at the foul line and you make the bounce pass. So we throw it to Garrison, he runs over the guy at the foul line and we do it every day and we will have 105 practices in 32 years. You can figure it out. So, we got to stop those kind of things and Garrison turned it over like that with the charge… So, I've have to wait and look at the film. I think he stayed down. I don't think that John [Mooney] got a single foul when he pump-faked up and Garrison stayed on the floor and tried to make him shoot over him. But what did John end up with, 10 points? 10-and-8? I'd take that every time because I think he's really good."
On the contribution from Andrew Platek
"I'm trying to play the best we can. Who's got No. 24 [Robby Carmody]? That's not acceptable and it's his [man]. But yes, Andrew made a big three – and I think right in front of our bench – that was really important late in the second half that gave us a little cushion, but you can't dribble the ball left hand, off your knee, out-of-bounds in the crunch time either."
On whether Cole Anthony's productivity comes from his confidence
"No, it's [Cole Anthony's] ability. It is. I mean, it's toughness. I'm confident and you know what? I can't do what the crap he takes. I couldn't when I was 20 and I can't when I'm 60 tonight… But the ability and his toughness. His toughness is something that I've really appreciated since the first time I watched him play as a high school freshman. Think he's one of the toughest. Between those lines during conditioning, during the simplest little thing, that is one tough little nut."
On why Cole Anthony took off his goggles
"I got no idea, but I thought he played better in the second half. So, my guess is he won't wear them again the next time."
On playing Cole Anthony for the entirety of the second half
"I told [Cole Anthony] earlier today that I would try to give him a rest around one TV timeout in the first half, but maybe one the second half, too, depending on the score of the game. He said 'Coach, I'm ready to go 40 [minutes].' I don't want him to do that very often to say the least. I want to give him a little more break than that, but we got to have the other guys that can step up because when he was out in the first half it was awfully ugly for us... Somebody's got to step up because I am not going to play him like that all the time."
Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey
Opening statement
"The thing about Cole Anthony that I really respect - and of course we recruited him obviously - is that in tenth grade he didn't want to shoot jump shots. He didn't even have any confidence in his jump shot. That's where he's made unbelievable strides. I thought his dagger threes were a big part of it. I love how we played, we came ready to battle. He just got on one of those rolls that we've all seen in the AAU circuit. You guys just didn't see it yet, but you saw it tonight. I thought that was really the difference for us. And then for us to beat this level of these teams, we had some great looks and we've got to make more of them to beat a team like that. We had great looks, we had 16 assists. We moved it, but we're going to have to make more from out there to escape. You've got to score more. We're disappointed because we thought we could maybe sneak into town and steal one. You know, they've got new faces. We're kind of growing up and getting healthier, so we're disappointed, but certainly a lot of respect for North Carolina and Cole was fabulous."
On not being afraid to shoot early
"I think we stepped up and fired. We even took a couple that were maybe bad and quick, but the way our system has been built through the years is we move it, we drive, we kick it. And those guys, if you got it, pull up and take it. I know the arc is a little further out, which we're all trying to kind of digest. I don't know if we have enough data yet. I didn't even want to say anything about it when we started practice because, our guys, good shooters shoot from deeper than this new line too. We got good looks, we were good with the ball, you just couldn't withstand [Cole] Anthony's phenomenal kind of push there and then his jump shot making. That's where I'm just so impressed with what he's done because he didn't even want to shoot the ball when he was 15-years-old, he just drove by everybody. He's made unbelievable strides."
North Carolina Players
Cole Anthony, Freshman Guard
On his second half performance
"I really want to give all the credit to my team. They found me, they got me open looks, they hustled and something clicked"
On telling Coach Williams he was ready to go the whole 40 minutes
"I was tired at one point, that's why I had the really careless turnover... I think my problem was that I showed my opponent I was tired. I kind of bent over a little bit. He took the hint, so I can't do that again."
On breaking the UNC freshman-debut scoring record
"It's cool. I'm going to be happy about it for a little bit tonight, give myself a pat on the back, but we have practice tomorrow. We've got to lock back in, we've got a game on Friday."
On being in the zone during the game
"I was a little bit in the zone, there's really not much to it. I worked for this. I'm happy to see my work pay off."
Andrew Platek, Junior Guard
On the gratifying feeling of seeing his work pay off in this game
"It's crazy. Only really my family and the people closest to me know what I've been through the past two years and how hard I've worked to have this opportunity. It's been the hardest thing in my life, but I'm so grateful for every minute I'm able to play for Coach [Roy Williams] and these guys. I'm just so thankful."
On how much fun this game was
"It's hard to describe because it just feels good to play basketball again. You know, with the fans, with the environment, with my teammates. Just to be out there more than a few minutes a game and to have an impact. To feel like I did something to help my team win and not just sit on the sideline and clap, even though that's important. It felt good to leave my mark on the game."
On Cole Anthony
"That dude is pretty good, isn't he? Just unbelievable. I've been telling everyone that will listen, he's the best point guard in the country. He's one of the best players in the country. He's going to show that every single game. He's just absolutely an unbelievable player. I've seen Luke [Maye] drop 30, I've seen Coby [White] drop 30, but to come out in your first game, that never happens. He just has a swagger that's unmatched and a confidence that's supreme. It's not cockiness, it's a belief in himself. That makes us play so much better. I knew he was going to find me on that three … That's the kind of player he is. He's always making the right play. That's why I love playing with him."
Garrison Brooks, Junior Forward
On the team's performance tonight
"I thought I played pretty decent. I played good defense, but Cole Anthony is awesome. Good as advertised, man. He really got us going today. He's one of the best players I've ever seen and I'm just proud of how he played tonight."
On Cole Anthony
"He's an all-around player. He had 10 rebounds — led the team in rebounds. I can't let that happen again, but he shot the ball really well, extremely well. Tough shots, a lot of great passes, Cole [Anthony] is just a really good player. Confidence is through the roof. It's just unexplainable. I wouldn't expect 34 out of the gate, but it was really good. I wasn't surprised. He's a really talented player and a really good scorer. I expect nothing but the greatest."
On starting the season against an ACC opponent
"Mentally, it takes us to January and gives us the kind of focus we'd like to have. I think it's one of those things that's really good for us. We need to maintain that kind of focus and preparation throughout the year and we'll be really good."
Armando Bacot, Freshman Forward
On how he describes Cole Anthony
"Just a great player and a great leader. He's working hard every day. After the Winston-Salem [State] game, [Cole Anthony] was here an hour after the game still shooting. He knew he wanted to come out and play a big game and impress all the fans, and that's what he did… He's just out there stealing my rebounds. I was talking to him about it after the game, I said you've got to stop stealing my rebounds. It's just good that Cole can go and get the rebound."
On his own play
"I thought I needed to be more aggressive, and just all in all it's my first game. It was just a little shaky, but I know I'll be better though."
On what he imagined when he committed
"Me visiting here and just seeing the lights cut off when the starting line-up comes out. It's just crazy to be in that position today and just to be able to do that is crazy."
