Tar Heel Staff Named Best In South Region

For the third year in a row, the UNC field hockey coaching staff has been named the South Region Coaching Staff of the Year. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its 2019 Spiideo/NFHCA Division I Regional Coaching Staffs of the Year on Monday.

The Tar Heel staff – head coach Karen Shelton, associate head coach Grant Fulton, assistant coach Robbert Schenk, volunteer assistant coach Jackie Briggs and performance analyst Chris Fry – led Carolina to a second-straight undefeated season in 2019, when the Tar Heels finished 23-0 with national and Atlantic Coast Conference titles. UNC is just the second program to accomplish back-to-back perfect seasons, on the third occasion. Old Dominion is the only other program to do it, most recently in 1991 and 1992.

The 2019 season was Shelton's 39^th as the program's head coach. It was the 15^th on the staff for Fulton, the second on this stint (and third overall) for UNC graduate Briggs and the first for Schenk and Fry.

UNC faced off during the season against three of the other four staffs honored: Boston College, Iowa and Princeton. The Mideast Region honoree was Fairfield and head coach Jackie Kane, the mother of Tar Heel junior Mimi Leonard.
