Carolina Takes Down UCLA, 4-1

SEATTLE - Defending champion and No. 2 seed North Carolina won in impressive fashion for the second time this week, 4-1, over No. 8 UCLA in the quarterfinals of the 2019 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship from Nordstrom Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Washington.
North Carolina (8-0) will face third seed Duke in a Monday semifinal match at 4 pm ET. The other semis dual features top seed Stanford and fifth seed Georgia.
The opening doubles point was decided in a tiebreaker on court two between Carolina's fifth ranked team of Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra and UCLA's Jada Hart and Elysia Bolton, the No. 15 ranked tandem in the country. UNC led the breaker 2-1, but saw the Bruins capture the next four points to edge ahead, 5-2. It was later tied at 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7, before the Heels came out on top, 9-7 to remain unbeaten in doubles this season.
Senior Jessie Aney, who clinched the first-round win over Oklahoma State on Friday, was first off in singles with a straight set victory over Taylor Johnson, 6-2, 6-0. Aney is a perfect 7-0 this spring in dual matches.
Next off for Carolina was No. 15 Sara Daavettila taking care of No. 18 Elysia Bolton, 6-4, 6-3.
The match came to a close on court three. No. 7 Alexa Graham defeated No. 117 Ayan Broomfield, 6-4, 6-3.
Sunday was the first matchup between UNC and UCLA since the 2015 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight match that went in favor of the Bruins, 4-1, in Waco, Texas. Carolina had not beaten UCLA since the title match of the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championship. On that day in Charlottesville, Va.,, the Tar Heels registered a 4-3 win to notch the first indoor title in program history.
UNC improves to 22-3 at ITA Indoors since the 2013 season. In that time frame, the Tar Heels won titles in 2013, 2015 and 2018, and reached the finals in 2016 and 2017.
