Just like anyone else who follows college basketball, Roy Williams said he noticed NC State's performance on Saturday, when the Wolfpack made 9 of 54 shots in a 47-24 home loss against Virginia Tech.
But he doesn't plan to learn anything else about that game.
Speaking with reporters ahead of Tuesday's home game against NC State, Williams said Monday that he doesn't plan to watch the film from the Wolfpack's loss against the Hokies. Instead, he chose just to watch the tape from North Carolina's last meeting with NC State and from the second half of Virginia's narrow win over the Wolfpack last Tuesday.
"I read one of (NC State head coach Kevin Keatts') comments where he said it was just unbelievable," Williams said. "So, why should I watch something that's unbelievable in that direction? Just like if they had beaten the Warriors, I wouldn't watch that, either."
Similarly, Garrison Brooks said he and his teammates can't look past the Wolfpack just because of its last game.
"It doesn't make any difference," he said. "They're going to be excited to play us. If they come out there and beat us, they'll forget all about that game."
Here are two other notes from Monday's press conference:
Shooting success
Since the start of the season, Williams has said that the Tar Heels could be a really good shooting team. At times, they haven't look like it. But entering Tuesday, they've made a school-record 53 3-pointers in the last five games (9 vs. Notre Dame and Miami, 16 vs. Virginia Tech, 13 at Georgia Tech and six at Louisville).
Nothing has changed, Williams said. The ball is just going in the basket.
"It's the same blasted things we were doing on the first day of practice that we're doing now," he said. "We practice the same amount of shots, talk to them about the quality of our shots compared to the quality of the other team's shots. … Perhaps someone would say their back feels a little better or their ankle isn't bothering them. But we've practiced the same way."
Limiting turnoversÂ
In UNC's 90-82 road win over N.C. State on Jan. 8, Carolina matched its season high with 23 turnovers. Those were the most turnovers by the Tar Heels in a road win since Feb. 2, 2006, when UNC committed 24 in a 77-62 win at Maryland.
Although Carolina has taken better care of the ball since its last game against the Wolfpack, Williams said how his team handles the press will be key on Tuesday.
"Some of them were silly plays on our part, but some of them were very good plays on North Carolina State's part, too," said Williams of the last game against N.C. State. "I would think that would be one of our emphases going into the game – that we can't turn it over like that and expect to be successful.Â
"They pick you up full court, they keep coming at you and they do it consistently. It's part of their game plan, so it's got to be part of our game plan to be able to try to play against that without turning it over."
