Johnson, Maye, White Earn All-ACC Honors

CHAPEL HILL – University of North Carolina guard Cameron Johnson earned a spot on the 2019 All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team, while teammates Luke Maye and Coby White made the second team, giving the Tar Heels three of the top 10 spots on the league's all-star teams.

Carolina, Duke and Virginia swept the five spots on the first team with Duke's Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett and Virginia's De'Andre Hunter and Kyle Guy joining Johnson on the first team. UNC and Virginia shared the regular-season ACC title with matching 16-2 records with the Blue Devils in third place at 14-4. All three teams are ranked in the top five in the nation.

Johnson was the fourth-leading vote-getter among the first-team selections, with Maye, a first-team pick in 2018, receiving the sixth-most votes overall and the most among the second-team honorees. He is the 78th first-team All-ACC selection for the Tar Heels, most in league history.

White received the ninth-most votes for the all-conference teams and also earned a spot on the All-Freshman team. He was chosen by 67 of 70 voters for the All-Freshman team, the second-highest vote-getter behind Williamson.

Johnson was third in balloting for Most Improved Player, head coach Roy Williams was third for coach of the year and Nassir Little was fourth in voting for Sixth Man of the Year.

"I'm happy for Cameron, Luke and Coby, and especially pleased for Cameron that his exceptional play all season was rewarded with a first-team selection," says Williams. "He worked so hard throughout the off season to overcome numerous injuries and hip surgery. We knew when he came to Carolina he was a talented player, but you can't say enough about the type of young man he is and how he has meshed with our team, particularly with our seniors, Luke and Kenny (Williams).

Johnson, a graduate student from Moon Township, Pa., is in his second year as a Tar Heel after graduating with honors from the University of Pittsburgh in three years. He leads the Tar Heels in scoring (16.8 points per game), three-pointers (83), three-point percentage (.469) and steals (40). He leads the ACC and is fourth in the nation in three-point percentage, the second highest in UNC single-season history. He has led the Tar Heels in scoring a dozen times, scored in double figures in 29 of 31 games and has five double-doubles. He led the Tar Heels to a 9-0 record in ACC road games, averaging 20.8 points and setting a UNC record by making 57.4 percent of his three-point attempts.

Johnson had 26 points in the win at No. 1 Duke, a career-high seven three-pointers at Wake Forest and had 25 points in the December win over No. 4 Gonzaga.

Maye earned his second All-ACC selection in as many years by averaging 14.6 points and 10.5 rebounds, which leads the team and is second in the league. The Huntersville, N.C., native is second in the ACC in double-doubles with 13, nine of which came in league play. He became just the second Tar Heel ever to have 30 points and 15 rebounds against Duke when he led the Tar Heels to an 88-72 win in Durham on February 20. In that win, he joined Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes as the only players in college basketball history to have a 30/15 game in a win over the No. 1 team in the nation, and became the first Tar Heel ever to score 30 points in games at both Duke and NC State (he had 33 in Raleigh a year ago).

Maye also had a career-high 20 rebounds at Boston College, 20 points and 16 boards against Gonzaga and 31 points in the home win over NC State. He became the first Tar Heel in history have three 30-point games against Wolfpack. He has 84 rebounds in the last six games (14.0 per game).

Maye also repeated as winner of the Skip Prosser Award, presented by the ACC to the top men's basketball scholar-athlete in the conference. He became the fourth Tar Heel to earn Academic All-ACC honors four times. He is in the top 50 all-time in UNC scoring (1,310) and is tied for 12th all-time in rebounds by a Tar Heel (890).

Maye has played in 58 ACC wins (including regular season and Tournament games), one behind the record of 59 set by Nate Britt and Isaiah Hicks from 2013-17.

White averaged a team-high 18.1 points in conference play, is Carolina's all-time leader in three-point field goals by a freshman and is climbing the list for most points by a Tar Heel freshman. The point guard from Goldsboro, N.C., earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors four times and was the ACC Player of the Week after he scored a combined 62 points in wins over Syracuse and Clemson.

White has hit 75 three-pointers (breaking the previous record of 72) and enters the ACC Tournament with 490 points, which is the ninth most by a Tar Heel freshman. He is the first Tar Heel freshman to score 30 points in three games – 34 against Syracuse, 33 against Miami and 33 against Texas. Saturday night, he scored a team-high 21 points, and had three assists, three blocks and no turnovers in 36 minutes, in Carolina's 79-70 win over Duke.

White leads Carolina in assists with 123 and free throw percentage (.817), the third-highest in the ACC. He is sixth in the league in three-pointers, seventh in assists and three-point percentage and ninth in scoring.

The Tar Heels won the ACC regular season title for a record 32nd time and are the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament. UNC begins play in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. vs. either No. 7 seed Louisville, No. 10 seed Georgia Tech or No. 15 seed Notre Dame.
