Maye Named Semifinalist For Sullivan Award
March 12, 2019 | Men's Basketball, Academics, Student-Athlete Development
CHAPEL HILL—UNC men's basketball senior Luke Maye has been named a semifinalist for the AAU Sullivan Award, which honors the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States.
In addition to athletic accomplishment, the award takes into account qualities of leadership, character and sportsmanship, and recognizes outstanding athletes who have shown strong moral character. The award has been presented annually by the AAU since 1930 as a salute to founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union, and a pioneer in amateur sports, James E. Sullivan.
Fan voting is a part of the selection criteria, and UNC fans can vote for Maye once per day until the end of the day on March 15.

A business administration major from Huntersville, N.C., Maye is a starting forward and captain for the third-ranked Tar Heels, who are 26-5 overall and earned a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title with a 16-2 record in league play.
He currently ranks second in the ACC in rebounding (10.5), ninth in free throw percentage (.780) and 15th in scoring (14.6). He is in the top 50 all-time in scoring by a Tar Heel (1,313 points) and is tied for 12th in UNC history with 890 rebounds.
For the second year in a row Maye was named the recipient of the Skip Prosser Award as the ACC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He has earned All-ACC Academic honors all four years in Chapel Hill and is just the fourth Tar Heel to accomplish that feat.
On Monday he was announced as second-team Academic All-America for the second year in a row. He is also a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.
Maye was the 2017 NCAA South Regional MVP and the Tar Heels went on to win the national championship that season. He was first-team All-ACC and third-team All-America in 2018.
In addition to being an academic and athletic standout, he is heavily involved in community outreach and is a frequent visitor to UNC Children's Hospital.
The AAU James E. Sullivan Award annually recognizes the outstanding amateur athlete whose outstanding athletic accomplishments are complemented by qualities of leadership, character and sportsmanship. Winners achieve great success on a national and/or international stage through competition in collegiate athletics, Olympic pursuit or similar high profile competitions. Presented by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the AAU Sullivan Award symbolizes the fostering of a community of respected amateur athletes whose example provides a great model to our AAU athletes.
