A forward from Huntersville, N.C., Maye has earned honors this season for both his athletic and academic achievements. He is averaging a double-double with 14.7 points and a team-high 10.5 rebounds heading into the NCAA Tournament, in which third-ranked UNC is the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Regional. He has been named second-team All-ACC and USBCA All-District and remains a candidate for several other postseason awards.
He recently won the Skip Prosser Award as the top men's basketball scholar-athlete in the ACC, earning the honor for the second year in a row. He has been named to the All-ACC Academic Team all four years at UNC and is just the fourth player in program history to accomplish that feat. Additionally he has been named second-team Academic All-America as a junior and senior.
In addition to being an academic and athletic standout, Maye is heavily involved in community outreach and is a frequent visitor to UNC Children's Hospital.
Other finalists are Mikaela Foecke (Nebraska, volleyball); Rachel Garcia (UCLA, softball); Townley Hass (Texas, swimming); Aleia Hobbs (LSU, track & field); Morgan Hurd (USA Gymnastics, gymnastics); McKenzie Milton (UCF, football) and Kathryn Plummer (Stanford, volleyball).
The AAU James E. Sullivan Award annually recognizes the outstanding amateur athlete whose outstanding athletic accomplishments are complemented by qualities of leadership, character and sportsmanship. Winners achieve great success on a national and/or international stage through competition in collegiate athletics, Olympic pursuit or similar high-profile competitions. Presented by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the AAU Sullivan Award symbolizes the fostering of a community of respected amateur athletes whose example provides a great model to our AAU athletes.
