March 29, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics, Women's Rowing, Wrestling, Swimming & Diving, Academics
Five Tar Heel student-athletes were among the 205 UNC undergraduates inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honorary society this week, recognizing outstanding academic performance even as they're representing the University in a varsity sport.
Student-athletes inducted were Jamie Antinori (gymnastics), Kate Boyer (women's swimming & diving), A.J. Rechenmacher (wrestling), Kelly Williams (rowing) and Caroline Young (rowing).
Induction ceremonies were held on Monday night, March 25, and included remarks by Interim Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and a keynote address by Dr. Betsy Towns, associate professor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
New members received certificates and Phi Beta Kappa keys, the organization's symbol.
Antinori, a junior from Park City, Utah, is majoring in biology with minors in neuroscience and Spanish for the professions.
Boyer, a senior from Dallas, is majoring in biostatistics and mathematics.
Rechenmacher, a junior from Raleigh, is majoring in biomedical engineering with a minor in chemistry.
Williams, a senior from Chevy Chase, Md., is majoring in environmental studies.
Young, a junior from Kissimmee, Fla., is majoring in business administration and history with a minor in philosophy, politics and economics.
Induction requirements are stringent: A student who has completed 75 hours of coursework in the liberal arts and sciences with a grade point average of 3.85 or better on a four-point scale is eligible for membership. Also eligible is any student who has completed 105 hours of coursework in the liberal arts and sciences with a 3.75 GPA. Grades earned at other universities are not considered. Less than 1 percent of all university students qualify.
Past and present Phi Beta Kappa members from across the country have included 17 American presidents, 41 U.S. Supreme Court Justices, more than 140 Nobel Laureates and numerous artistic, intellectual and political leaders.
UNC's Phi Beta Kappa chapter, Alpha of North Carolina, was founded in 1904 and is the oldest of the state's seven chapters.
