Freshman makes 21 saves versus Duke
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Notre Dame midfielder Bryan Costabile has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week and North Carolina's Caton Johnson has captured the league's Defensive Player of the Week award.
After playing just eight minutes in the first nine games of the season, Johnson earned his first career start against No. 5 Duke and the true freshman made 21 saves and allowed just seven goals while facing 41 shots. Johnson's 21 saves were the most in a game by a true freshman in UNC history and the most in any game by a Tar Heel goalkeeper since Kieran Burke made 21 against Harvard in March 2015. The Tar Heels' 10-8 win over the Blue Devils was their first against Duke since 2016.
Costabile tied his career high for goals in a game with five in a win over No. 8 Syracuse. The junior led the Irish in goals and points (5) in the 13-10 victory. Costabile leads the Irish in goals for the season with 23 and has scored at least once in every game during the 2019 campaign.
