UNC Beats Liberty to Match Season-Best Winning Streak

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina came from behind to defeat Liberty, 3-2, and extend their winning streak to five games on Wednesday evening. Heads up base-running by Destiny DeBerry gave Carolina the edge for the Tar Heels 24th win of the season.

The Tar Heels jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first off Megan Dray's double in the first. Liberty responded with two runs in the third before Carolina knotted the game in the bottom of the frame on a Kristina Burkhardt RBI-single. DeBerry clinched UNC's win in the fifth, scoring on a Liberty miscue. Defensively, Brittany Pickett struck out five batters and picked up her 15th win this year.

Looking forward, Carolina hosts No. 3 Florida State for a three game series, Saturday through Monday. After the Heels' win against Liberty, UNC moves up to 24-13 and the Flames drop to 27-15.

Key Moments
» Pickett started off the game by striking out the first two batters. A throw from Abby Settlemyre to Campbell Hutcherson finished out the inning.
» In the bottom of the first, Kiani Ramsey advanced to first on a fielder's choice, then stole second. Dray doubled to right field, allowing Ramsey to score for an early 1-0 lead.
» Despite a leadoff single, Dray and Settlemyre teamed up to catch the runner stealing second. However, the Flames kept their bats hot with five hits in the inning, sroring two runs on RBI-singles to center.
» Carolina responded with double to left field by DeBerry lead off the home half. Murray followed with a single that moved DeBerry to third who later scored off of Burkhardt's single, knotting the game at two runs.
» Pickett struck out Liberty's first two batters up to the plate in the top of the fifth, then a quick flip from Murray to Hutcherson wrapped up the top half of the inning.
» The 2-2 stalemate ended in the fifth as DeBerry gave UNC the lead. The lefty singled through the middle to earn the Tar Heels' sixth hit of the game. DeBerry stole second, then a second Liberty error allowed her to score Carolina's third run which would be enough for the win.
» The Tar Heels defense held strong and Pickett's fifth strikeout clinched the 3-2 victory.
