Five Players Remain In ITA National Rankings
April 16, 2019 | Women's Tennis
North Carolina, the ACC regular season women's tennis champions for the sixth time in seven seasons, will begin postseason play ranked No. 2 nationally according to Tuesday's release of the updated Oracle/ITA rankings.Â
The Tar Heels continue to boast five singles players among the top 125 in the nation, and a pair of doubles tandems in the top 10.Â
Makenna Jones and Alexa Graham both slipped one place in the singles standings this week to No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, while junior classmate Sara Daavettila checks in No. 14, down two places despite two wins last weekend against Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.Â
Freshman Cameron Morra checks in at No. 41 and senior Jessie Aney moves up seven places to No. 118. The Rochester, Minnesota, native has registered five-straight singles wins going back to late March.Â
Carolina's doubles teams went unchanged from last week. Morra and Jones remain No. 6 and are immediately followed at No. 7 by Aney and Graham.Â
North Carolina, winners of the last three ACC Championship tournaments, will take its unblemished league record and 17-match unbeaten streak into the 2019 ACC Championship. The top seeded Tar Heels will face either No. 8 seed Georgia Tech or No. 9 seed Syracuse on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
A victory Friday would send Carolina to the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. The finals are scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. Both weekend matches can be seen live on ACC Network Extra.Â
UNC (26-1, 14-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) defeated the Yellow Jackets last Friday down in Atlanta, 4-1, and defeated the Orange, 5-2, in central New York on March 29.Â
