April 20, 2019 | Men's Golf
Tar Heels Shoot 1 Over in Final Round
UNC sophomore Ryan Gerard and junior Austin Hitt shot 1-under-par 71s and finished tied for 14th and tied for 18th, respectively, at the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship.
Â
Georgia Tech won the team title with a tournament -record 37 under par score, 22 strokes ahead of Virginia. Florida State's John Pak shot 69 on Saturday to finish at 13 under 203 to take medalist honors by a shot over Georgia Tech's Andy Ogletree.
Â
Carolina shot 1 over in the final round to finish at 4 over 868 for the tournament. The Tar Heels were 10th in the 12-team field.
Â
"We didn't play nearly as well as we are capable," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "It doesn't reflect the strides we've made as a group since the end of the fall. We'll learn from this, return home and work to get better like we always do. Our guys will take final exams and then we'll be fully focused on NCAAs."
Â
Gerard opened with a 74 on Thursday before shooting 67 in the second round and 71 today to lead UNC with a 212 total. Hitt shot even par 72 in the first round and posted a pair of 71s in the final two rounds to close at 214.
Â
Ryan Burnett tied for 38th at 220 (75-70-75), Joshua Martin tied for 47th at 223 (76-74-73) and Dougie Ergood was 56th at 226 (76-76-74).
