Carolina’s Late Hitting Clinches 3-0 Win Over UNCW
April 23, 2019 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Coming down to the sixth inning, North Carolina broke a scoreless game for the 3-0 shutout victory over UNCW on Tuesday evening.
After nearly six scoreless innings, a leadoff single by Zoë Goodman followed by a fielder's choice set up for UNC to take the lead. RBI-singles by Kristina Burkhardt and Kiani Ramsey gave Carolina the 3-0 edge it would need for the 30th win of the season. Hannah George tossed her fourth complete-game shutout with a career high of eight strikeouts.
UNC improves to 30-15 while the Seahawks fall to 24-24. Carolina travels to UNCG Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup vs. the Spartans. The Tar Heels conclude their ACC schedule at Louisville Friday through Sunday.
Key Moments
» Ramsey broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle in the fourth, but she was caught stealing second.
» The Seahawks' Anna Hessenthaler singled to left then advanced to second on a sac-bunt to put UNCW in scoring position. Despite loading the bases, a popup to Abby Settlemyre kept UNCW at bay.
» After five scoreless innings, Zoë Goodman led off the sixth with a pinch hit single to first to set up for Carolina's three-run inning. A fielder's choice backfired as both Tar Heels were safe. Settlemyre and Tainasha Vines pulled off the double-steal to put UNC in scoring position. Kristina Burkhardt battled through a full count and sent a two-run single up the middle for the lead. Ramsey followed suit with her second hit of the day to finalize the score at 3-0.
» Winning Pitcher: Hannah George (12-4) // Losing pitcher: Haley Lenderman (9-12)
Noteworthy
» George struck out seven for a new single game high.
» With a pair of strolen bases, Carolina upped its season total to 94.
» Two streaks came to an end against UNCW. Megan Dray's reached-base streak ended at 19 games. Leah Murray's hitting streak ended at 15 games.
» Murray is up to 100 career stolen bases – three away from breaking the UNC program record.
