Program-Record Five Tar Heels Earn All-ACC Honors
April 25, 2019 | Men's Tennis
North Carolina led the league as the Atlantic Coast Conference men's tennis teams were announced Thursday, with five Tar Heels earning all-conference honors. Junior William Blumberg and sophomore Benjamin Sigouin were named to the first team, freshman Brian Cernoch was named to the second team, and senior Blaine Boyden and junior Josh Peck were named to the third team. No other ACC team had more than three honored this year.
Â
"This shows the depth of our team," UNC coach Sam Paul said. "It's a tremendous honor, particularly in a conference as tough as ours."
Â
It's the first time UNC has ever had five players named All-ACC in the same year. The Tar Heels have had four on several previous occasions, including last season, when Blumberg, Boyden and Sigouin were honored, along with then-senior Robert Kelly.
Â
It's the first All-ACC honors for Cernoch and Peck. Blumberg and Sigouin both have been first-team picks in each year at UNC, so this marks the third time for Blumberg and the second for Sigouin.
Â
Boyden, a team captain and the lone senior on the roster, was named to the All-ACC third team for the second year in a row.
Â
"I'm happy for everybody, but really happy for Bo to be honored for a second time," Paul said. "He's been such an important part of our program and such a great leader, so I'm really pleased to see him recognized in this way."
Â
The honors are determined by a vote of the league's head coaches. Virginia swept the individual honors with Carl Söderlund named Player of the Year, Brandon Nakashima Freshman of the Year and Andres Pedroso Coach of the Year.
Â
The Tar Heels, 18-6 this season, will find out what the rest of the season will hold when the 2019 NCAA Tournament bracket is announced at NCAA.com on Monday evening. First-round play begins on May 3 at campus sites.
