Carolina Falls to No. 5 Florida State in ACC Championship
May 11, 2019 | Softball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After a record-breaking semifinal game, North Carolina was unable take down the second-seeded, No. 5 Seminoles, falling 8-0 in six innings in the 2019 ACC Championship Saturday in Tallahassee, Florida. Carolina battled to the end but Florida State earned the ACC's automatic qualifier spot in the NCAA Tournament with the shutout.
"Obviously our goal was to be ACC Champs," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "We had the opportunity to do that today, but we fell short. I liked how we fought to get here, but I'm not as excited about how we competed in this game in particular. I know we have another weekend to prove ourselves but this was the one I really wanted for us.
"Florida State has won the ACC the past few years and the National Championship last year. They know how to win on the days that count. We didn't make our day count today. Hopefully we can take this feeling and understand what it takes to win a three-game series. That's the only way we can grow from this experience today."
Seniors Kiani Ramsey and Leah Murray, and junior Brittany Pickett earned ACC All-Tournament honors for their performances during the week. Ramsey led the Tar Heels with a .556 average and four RBI while stealing a pair of bases. Murray went 4-for-9 with a trio of runs and two stolen bases. Pickett started all three games for Carolina, going 2-1 in the circle while striking out 22 in 15.2 innings.
Sitting at 35-18, the Tar Heels await their NCAA Tournament destination Sunday at 9 p.m. with the selection show on ESPN2. Florida State improves to 51-8 heading into the NCAA Tournament.
