Tar Heel junior William Blumberg and sophomore Benjamin Sigouin open play Monday in NCAA men's tennis singles competition, a 64-player draw that culminates on Saturday with the championship match. Play takes place at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., where the Tar Heels wrapped up their team season on Saturday with the program's second-ever appearance in the national semifinals.
As a team, Carolina (22-7) fell 4-3 to defending-champion Wake Forest, which in turn fell to Texas Sunday in the title match. Three Tar Heels play on, with Blumberg in both the singles and doubles draws for the third time in his career. Sigouin is making his second appearance in the singles draw. Senior Blaine Boyden is making his first appearance in the individual competition and will play doubles with Blumberg. That competition starts on Tuesday.
Blumberg is seeded in the 9-16 group in singles and meets Harrison Scott of Texas Monday at 1 p.m.
Sigouin plays at 5 p.m. against South Florida's Alberto Barroso-Campos, who is also in the 9-16 group.
Blumberg and Boyden open doubles play on Tuesday, facing Vanderbilt's Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe at a time still to be announced.
