Blumberg Blazes Trail Into Quarterfinals
May 22, 2019 | Men's Tennis
North Carolina junior William Blumberg added another distinction to an already impressive collegiate career Wednesday when he became the first Tar Heel in program history to reach the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship quarterfinals three times.
Playing at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Blumberg beat Florida's Oliver Crawford, ranked ninth nationally, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to become one of the final eight standing. On Thursday he'll face TCU's Alex Rybakov, who is seeded third in the singles field and ranked fourth in the ITA rankings. Blumberg is No. 19 in the most recent rankings, released on May 1.
Thursday's match is set for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast by the Tennis Channel.
Blumberg reached the quarterfinals last season and the finals his freshman year, when he finished as the NCAA runner-up.
Teammate Benjamin Sigouin saw his tournament run and sophomore season come to an end Wednesday, as he fell to South Carolina's Paul Jubb, 6-1, 6-4. Jubb, currently ranked fifth nationally, also eliminated Sigouin in 2018, but that time the two met in the first round. This year, No. 39 Sigouin picked up two wins to reach the Round of 16 and become the 30th Tar Heel to earn All-America honors.
UNC's doubles team of Blumberg and senior Blaine Boyden also fell on Wednesday. They lost 7-5, 6-2 to Alabama's Patrick Kaukovalta and Mazen Osama in the Round of 16.
