May 23, 2019 | Men's Tennis
UNC junior William Blumberg, the first player in Tar Heel men's tennis program history to reach the NCAA singles quarterfinals three times, saw his postseason run come to an end on Thursday evening with a loss to TCU's Alex Rybakov, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Blumberg was the last Tar Heel standing in the 2019 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, being played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Blumberg was facing Rybakov, a senior ranked No. 4 nationally and seeded third in the draw, for the second time this season. The first meeting was in February at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, when UNC beat TCU 4-3 in the quarterfinals. That one also went three sets, with Rybakov winning the second and third to take the match, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2.
