Tar Heels Advance To NCAA Round of 16 For Sixth Year In A Row
May 4, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the sixth year in a row, the UNC men's tennis team is headed for the Sweet 16. The ninth-seeded and 10th-ranked Tar Heels (20-6) beat No. 18 Georgia 4-1 Saturday in a second-round match at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center to survive and advance.
"We knew we were playing a great program in Georgia, so it's a great win for us," UNC coach Sam Paul said. "Manny (Diaz, Georgia's coach) does such an unbelievable job. We're happy to be moving on – it's a very, very good win for us."
UNC's Blaine Boyden, a captain and the team's only senior, clinched the match on Court 5 with the 94th win of his singles career.
Next up for the Tar Heels is eighth-seeded Southern California, which advanced Saturday with a homecourt win over San Diego and will continue to host as a top-eight seed. UNC and USC will meet next Saturday (May 11) in Los Angeles. Match time is 5 p.m. ET.
