Maye Wins Jim Tatum Award

CHAPEL HILL – Luke Maye, a senior on the UNC men's basketball team, was honored at the 2019 Chancellor's Awards Ceremony as the winner of this year's Jim Tatum Memorial Award. The award is given annually to the varsity intercollegiate athlete who has performed with distinction in his or her sport and who has contributed to the University community through constructive participation in co-curricular activities.

Maye, team captain, has distinguished himself athletically, academically and in community service during his four years at UNC.  He was the winner of the 2019 Senior CLASS Award as the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I men's basketball and a finalist for the AAU Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete. A business administration major, he earned the Skip Prosser Award as the ACC's top men's basketball scholar-athlete in both 2018 and 2019.Â

Maye finished his UNC career ranked 10thin program history with 942 rebounds and set a program record for most rebounds in consecutive seasons with 750 over his junior and senior campaigns. As a senior, he was an honorable mention All-America and second team All-ACC, starting all 36 games for the Tar Heels, who tied for the regular-season ACC Championship and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.Â

Throughout his time in Chapel Hill he has been extremely involved in outreach, making frequent visits to visit with patients at UNC Hospitals. He was a 2018 recipient of the ACC Top Six for Service Award, recognizing outstanding community involvement. At this year's RAMMY Awards, on April 22, he received the McCaskill Award as UNC's top all-around male student-athlete.Â

The Tatum Award was established in 1959 in honor of James M. Tatum, UNC's football coach in 1942 and then 1956-58. Maye is the first men's basketball player to win the honor since Tyler Zeller in 2012.Â
