June 3, 2019 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina juniors Michael Busch and Tyler Baum were both selected on the first day of the 2019 MLB Draft. Busch was selected 31st overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baum was selected 66th overall by the Oakland Athletics. Busch became the 23rd Tar Heel taken in the first round or supplemental round in program history, the 15th in Mike Fox's 21 seasons as a head coach and 11th since 2006.
A native of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, the junior was recently named the 2019 ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player as well as first-team All ACC for the second consecutive year. Busch's 138 walks are currently the second most in program history and he joins Dan Moylan and Dustin Ackley as one of only three players in program history with two seasons of 50 or more walks.
Busch is also the first Tar Heel to have back-to-back seasons with 10 or more home runs since Chad Flack from 2005-2006 and his 29 home runs over the last two seasons are tied for second most in a two-year span under Mike Fox, only trailing Chris Maples who hit 30 from 2001-2002. Named a first-team preseason All-American by D1 Baseball and Baseball American, Busch has a career batting average of .284, scored 166 runs, collected 172 hits with 32 home runs and driven in 142 RBIs. So far in 2019, he is batting .290 with 75 runs scored, 16 home runs and 57 RBIs.
Baum has been one of the Diamond Heel top arms sine he stepped on campus and went 7-0 during his freshman season, becoming eighth pitcher in Carolina history to win at least seven decisions without a loss in a single season. The right hander has been a part of the weekend rotation for the last two years and is 18-4 in his career.
So far in his junior season, the third-team All ACC pitcher is 7-3 with a 3.95 ERA, leads the team in innings pitched (86.2), strikeouts (92) and is tied for the team lead in wins. Overall during his three years, the native of Ocoee, Florida has a 3.73 ERA and has amassed 213 strikeouts in 50 appearances.
