Sabato And Serretti Earn Freshman All-America Honors

TUCSON, Arizona -- Aaron Sabato and Danny Serretti were named Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, the site announced Wednesday morning. Sabato, who was previously named a first-team All-American by College Baseball, was also named the Co-National Freshman Of The Year. This is the first time since 2013 that North Carolina has had multiple freshman All-Americans with Skye Bolt, Landon Lassiter and Trent Thornton. Sabato and Serretti led the team in conference batting average to become the first pair of freshman to do that since Josh Horton and Chad Flack in 2005.
A native of Rye Brook, N.Y., Sabato having one of the best freshman seasons in recent Carolina Baseball history. The ACC Freshman of the Year has set the single season freshman home run record with 16 long balls, besting the previous record of 15 set by Chad Flack in 2015. Sabato also led the team in batting average during conference play (.358), and is the first freshman to do that since Colin Moran was named ACC Freshman of the year in 2011. He currently leads the team in batting average (.341), hits (74), doubles (23), tied for first in home runs (16), RBIs (58), total bases (147) and slugging percentage (.677). The freshman leads the team in multi-hit games (22), tied for first in multi-RBI games (16) and is the first Tar Heel since 2012 to hit for the cycle when he did so on Thursday May 16 against NC State. He is the seventh Tar Heel to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year joining Brian Roberts (1997), Adam Greenberg (2000), Daniel Bard (2004), Dustin Ackley (2007), Colin Moran (2011) and Ashton McGee (2017).
Serretti, a native of Berkely Heights, N.J., has made his own history this year becoming the first freshman under head coach Mike Fox to have two games with five or more hits in a single season, and is the first overall Tar Heel to do so since Dustin Ackley in 2009. Serretti is also the first Tar Heel to have a six RBI game since Colin Moran in 2013. Ackley is currently second on the team in batting average (.295) and doubles (18) and has started 58 of the 57 games he has appeared in. After starting the year at second base, Serretti has been the starting shortstop for hte back half of the season and has solidified the batting order hitting in the three and four holes.Â
