Wiltrout Earns Another Historic NCAA Finish For Tar Heels
June 7, 2019 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas — North Carolina's Madison Wiltrout finished third in the women's javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas's Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday. Despite weather delays, Wiltrout (Connellsville, Pa.) remained focused and took full advantage of the sunny skies to throw 181-1 (55.21 meters) for first-team All-America honors.
Wiltrout's third-place finish is not only the best by a Tar Heel women's javelin thrower since 1992 (Lynda Lipson, 2nd), but her performance also marks Carolina's highest NCAA Outdoor finish in a women's event since Brie Felnagle in the 1,500 meters (1st) in 2007.
"Once again, it's an amazing job by Madison, Coach Jeff Gorski, our strength and conditioning staff and our sport medicine staff," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "Madison is just a redshirt freshman and she was one of the best javelin throwers in high school history. She came to us pretty banged up just a year ago so her success today was a product of her trusting our program to take care of her and to keep her healthy so that she'd be able to compete at an elite level. It's been a process getting her here, but I think she's done a phenomenal job. We tried to be smart throwing her and resting her, and it's incredible to see her earn first-team All-America status in her first appearance at this NCAA Championship meet. For her to be the second-highest javelin thrower finish in UNC history, that's pretty phenomenal, too. I couldn't be more proud of her and I'm really grateful to everybody who helped make this happen for her. She's had a great season and we truly believe that she had the ability to win it all if things had been perfect. They weren't perfect, but they were pretty good so we're all excited to see what she can do in these next three seasons."
In her first competition season, redshirt freshman Wiltrout undoubtedly left her mark on the North Carolina program as well as NCAA Division I competition. She won the women's javelin ACC title at the 2019 ACC Outdoor Championships with a mark of 182-5 (55.60 meters) and set the school record twice in just eight appearances. Wiltrout was also the only freshman to make the final in Friday's javelin competition.
"Honestly — no matter what the records are — I know it took a lot for me to get here, same as everybody else," Wiltrout said. "A lot of hard times, a lot of setbacks, so to still be able to come out in the top three, that's awesome for me. Of course you want more. Everybody wants that first-place spot, but I'm really happy with my first season and there's plenty more to go."
Wiltrout earned six points for the Tar Heels to move them into 16th place in the team standings.
