Tar Heels Open NCAA Championships On Wednesday
June 4, 2019 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas — North Carolina's two individual qualifiers and men's 4x400 relay will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas's Mike A. Myers Stadium beginning Wednesday, June 5 through Saturday, June 8.
Competition at the NCAA Championships now begins Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT due to inclement weather forecasts. The men's 4x400 kicks off the Tar Heels' appearances later that evening at 7:18 p.m. CT, two and a half hours earlier than their original time slot. In order to earn a spot in Friday's championship race, the relay must either finish among the top two in the heat or finish with one of the next two best times. The 4x400 finished seventh at the NCAA East Preliminary Round with a season-best time of 3:05.44 after winning their second of back-to-back ACC Championship titles two weeks prior. If the relay qualifies for the final round, they will return to the track on Friday, June 7 at 9:51 p.m. CT in hopes of capturing the national title.
On Thursday, redshirt freshman Madison Wiltrout will make her first NCAA Championship appearance in the women's javelin at 8:15 p.m. CT. Wiltrout (Connellsville, Pa.) is one of three current Tar Heels to hold a UNC school record and one of Carolina's four ACC champions at the 2019 conference meet in May.
Making her outdoor championship debut, redshirt junior Nicole Greene (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) will look to capture another NCAA title on Saturday in the women's high jump competition at 5 p.m. CT. The three-time All-American high jumper was crowned NCAA Champion at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships before redshirting the 2018 outdoor and 2019 indoor seasons. Since her return, Greene has set the facility record at Virginia's Lannigan Field, won her first-ever ACC title by a staggering seven inches and maintained no less than a No. 2 national ranking for the entirety of the outdoor season.
