UNC tops Coastal Carolina in Preseason Exhibition
August 24, 2019 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL –  A balanced Tar Heel offense paved the way for UNC's 3-1 exhibition victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels won the first three sets and the Chanticleers won the fourth.
Â
Through three sets, freshman Parker Austin led UNC's offense with double-digit kills. Both Annabelle Archer and Hunter Atherton saw time setting with Archer taking the first two sets and Atherton the last two. Mia Fradenburg grounded the defense with double-digit digs while Karenna Wurl led Carolina with three aces.
Â
Wurl set the tone for the match with an ace for the first point of the exhibition. A Destiny Cox – Katharine Esterley block forced a timeout for Coastal as the Tar Heels led 17-14. A kill by Skyy Howard clinched the 25-20 win.
Â
Despite winning the second set 25-21, the Tar Heels struggled out of the gate as the Chanticleers earned the first three points. However a Ryan Shannon ace evened up the frame at 5-5. The set remained within two points until Archer muscled a kill at the net for a 22-20 lead and eventual set win.
Â
A new Tar Heel lineup took the court to begin the third that clinched a 25-18 win for the Tar Heels. Carly Peck, Howard and Austin formed a triple block in the third set that forced a Coastal Carolina timeout. Back-to-back Howard kills gave UNC a five point lead late in the set that the Chanticleers were unable to come back from.
Â
Coastal Carolina won the fourth set 25-21. However, the format of the NCAA LiveStats program, stats were not kept for the set.
Â
The Tar Heels begin the regular season Aug. 30-31 with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill. Carolina faces Minnesota in the 2019 opener at 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 30. Opening weekend wraps up with Wisconsin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Carmichael Arena.
