Cross Country Opens Season Under The Lights At Elon
August 29, 2019 | Cross Country
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina cross country teams open their 2019 campaign under the lights at the Elon Opener in Elon, N.C. on Friday, August 30. The women's 4K is set to begin at 8:15 p.m. ET with the men's 6K following at 8:40 p.m. ET.
For the second year in a row, the Tar Heels will be debuting not just a new roster but also two new coaches, program director Chris Miltenberg and assistant coach Dylan Sorensen. Miltenberg and Sorensen joined Carolina over the summer after several successful seasons — seven under Miltenberg and two with Sorensen — at Stanford.
"This will be a low-key season opener for us after our first two weeks of practice together," Miltenberg said. "I'm still learning our team by the day so it's going to be great to use this meet as another chance to see where we are at in training. Most of all, it will be a great chance to lay the race day foundations and routines that will carry is throughout the year. We're exited to get started! "
The Tar Heels return a significant number of familiar faces after losing just one graduate student, Nick Golebiowski, from the 2018 rosters.
The men's team added five new members, including four freshman and sophomore transfer John Tatter. Tatter, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C. and the 2017 Foot Locker South Regional Champion, spent his freshman season with the University of Michigan and earned All-Region honors at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships.
Five women also joined the North Carolina cross country program — three freshman and two graduate transfers — while All-Region and All-ACC competitor, Morgan Ilse, makes her long-awaited return to the cross country course. Ilse, a native of Dunwoody, Ga., redshirted the 2018 cross country and 2019 outdoor seasons but still managed to earn a runner-up finish in the women's mile for All-ACC honors at the 2019 ACC Indoor Championships.
