Six Tar Heels, Most In Program History, Earn NFCA Scholar Athlete Honor
September 17, 2019 | Softball, Academics
A program-high six North Carolina softball student-athletes have been honored as recipients of the Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete award for 2018-19. The honor goes to players who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average through the academic year.
Â
The NFCA honored Destiny DeBerry, Leah Murray, Katie Grace Olinger, Sierra Parkinson, Brittany Pickett and Kiani Ramsey for their classroom performance in the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. Olinger was recognized for the second year in a row, and the rest earned the award for the first time.
Â
DeBerry, Murray and Ramsey all graduated in May with degrees in exercise and sport science.
Â
Parkinson is a psychology major who medically retired from the team following the 2019 season.
Â
Pickett is a senior pitcher from Indian Trail, N.C., and is majoring in exercise and sport science.
Â
Olinger is a junior pitcher from Gainesville, Fla., and is majoring in advertising and public relations in UNC's Hussman School of Journalism and Media.
Â
North Carolina has had at least one honoree each year since 2010, but had never before had more than four in one season.
Â
Murray, Pickett and Ramsey also earned All-ACC Academic honors in 2019. That award takes into account both athletic and academic performance.
