Tar Heels Host No. 5 Princeton Friday For Season Opener
September 5, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL – Fresh off a pair of comeback wins last weekend, the North Carolina field hockey team opens its home schedule on Friday with a top-five battle at Karen Shelton Stadium. As part of the Conference Crossover, which brings together teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Ivy League, No. 1 UNC will face No. 5 Princeton at 5 p.m. In the day's opening game, No. 10 Wake Forest plays Penn at 2:30 p.m.
The teams switch opponents on Sunday, with Wake and Princeton playing at 11 a.m. and UNC taking on Penn at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the new ACC Network.
"We're so excited to open our home schedule hosting Wake Forest, Princeton and Penn for this great event," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "There's just something about playing on our home turf and seeing all our fans in the stands – it's such a special feeling, and we can't wait."
Admission is free to all regular-season Carolina games. On Friday there will be free pizza for the first 100 UNC students at the Tar Heels' game against Princeton.
UNC is 2-0 after wins over No. 7 Michigan and No. 8 Iowa at last weekend's ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich. Princeton, like Carolina a final four team last season, is opening its season on Friday. The teams met last season in Philadelphia at this same event, with the Tar Heels winning 1-0 on a late goal by Megan DuVernois.
