Clemson (ClemsonTigers.com)
Location: Clemson, S.C.
Rankings: No. 93 KenPom, NR AP
NET/SOS: No. 99 NET, No. 43 SOS
Record: 7-7, 1-3 ACC
Carolina Series History (Last Meeting): UNC leads 133-21 (UNC 81, CU 79, March 2, 2019, Littlejohn Coliseum)
Through a quirk in the ACC schedule, Saturday marks the second in a five-game run for Clemson in which all five games are against North Carolina foes. The Tigers kicked that string off in style last Saturday, surging late for an 81-70 win over NC State. After Saturday's trip to Chapel Hill, Brad Brownell's squad gets a visit from Duke on Tuesday before a return to the Triangle to face NC State and then a home contest against Wake Forest.
Saturday also marks just the third road game of the year for Clemson, and the first two did not go well - a 78-60 thumping at Minnesota in the ACC/B1G Challenge followed by a 19-point loss at Florida State.
A pair of veterans lead the way for the Tigers in terms of production, with junior Aamir Simms posting team highs of 13.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. At 6-8 and a capable shooter from both the perimeter and the foul line, Simms is a matchup problem for any team. Grad transfer Tevin Mack gives Clemson another strong all-around performer (11.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg).
While Carolina's injury woes have been well-documented, Clemson is facing its own roster crisis. Projected starters Clyde Trapp, Jonathan Baehre and Chase Hunter have all missed significant time. Trapp and Baehre both suffered offseason ACL tears - Trapp returned in December while Baehre has played in just two games - while freshman guard Chase Hunter has missed seven of the last eight games and is questionable Saturday.
Statistically, Clemson is as it has been under Brownell - a defense-first team that limits opponents on the glass and forces a good amount of turnovers. If Simms and Mack get some offensive help from teammates Al-Amir Dawes, John Newman and Curran Scott like they did in the win over NC State, the Tigers have a real chance to make history in Chapel Hill.
