January 13, 2020 | Football
NEW ORLEANS - North Carolina record-setting quarterback Sam Howell was named to the Football Writers Association of America-Shaun Alexander Freshman All-America Team on Monday.Â
Howell, one of two signal-callers on the team, tossed a true freshman FBS record 38 passing touchdowns in 2019. The previous record was 30 from Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, one of two quarterbacks on last year's FWAA Freshman All-America Team. The other quarterback listed is USC's Kedon Slovis, the Trojans first quarterback to pass for 400 yards four times in a season and ranks in the national top 20 in five passing categories including yards, completions and touchdowns. Both were their conference's Rookie (ACC) or Freshman Offensive Player of the Year (Pac-12).Â
Howell finished the 2019 season with 3,641 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. His 38 passing touchdowns rank fourth in the FBS this season, and he broke the previous single-season record at North Carolina set by Mitchell Trubisky in 2016 (30).
A third team All-ACC selection, Howell became the first freshman to ever receive MVP honors at the Military Bowl. He finished 25 of 34 for 294 yards, three passing TDs, one receiving TD and 53 yards rushing in the 55-13 bowl win over Temple.
He put together a streak of 13 consecutive games with multiple touchdown passes and had eight games with three or more TD passes.
