Carolina Advances Past Auburn At ITA Kick-Off

CHAPEL HILL - No. 2 North Carolina defeated Auburn 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center during ITA Kick-off Weekend.
To begin today's match, doubles duo Elizabeth Scotty and Cameron Morra dominated on court three, winning 6-1. In an exciting top-10 matchup, #6 Alexa Graham and Sara Daavettila battled back and forth against #9 Taylor Russo and Seli Ovunc. In come-from-behind fashion, Carolina (3-0) ultimately won the set 7-5 to grab the early 1-0 edge over the Tigers.
On court two, it appeared that Alle Sanford and Makenna Jones would win comfortably to clinch the opening point after taking a 5-2 lead, but Auburn (2-1) fought back to send the set to a tiebreaker. The match was unfinished with Sanford and Jones up 4-0 when play was haulted.
The first singles point came courtesy of #4 Daavettila on court two, who won 6-0, 6-3. To advance the score to 3-0, Scotty won both her sets on court six, 6-3, 6-2. #8 Graham clinched the Carolina victory by defeating Selin Ovunc, 6-4, 6-1, to make it 4-0.
In the first match of the day, Columbia put up a good fight against Old Dominion but the Monarchs held on for the 4-1 victory.
The championship match between Carolina and Old Dominion will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Afterwards, Auburn and Columbia will play their consolation match at 6:00 p.m. The winner between Carolina and ODU will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 7-10 in Chicago, Ill.
