GoHeels Exclusive: Wanting More
January 6, 2020 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – It's been 232 days since May 19 when the Tar Heels' historic 2019 season came to an end in Knoxville, Tennessee. Carolina fought through three elimination games, defeating Ohio State, Longwood and 11th-seeded Tennessee. However, the Lady Vols outlasted UNC with a two-run double in the fifth inning, claiming the NCAA regional title and ending the Tar Heels' season.
Although the 2019 campaign ended earlier than hoped, the Tar Heels inked their names in the record books. Beginning with a shutout over No. 9 South Carolina on Feb. 10, UNC topped nine ranked foes throughout the year – three more than any Tar Heel team prior. Carolina won the series against No. 3 Florida State, marking UNC's first wins over a top-five team in program history and snapping a 16-game losing streak to FSU since 2013. The Tar Heels continued their success on the base paths, upping their single-season record for the fourth year in a row.
Despite the many team and individual records broken in 2019, it's not enough and the Tar Heels want more in 2020. In addition to fall practices and games, Carolina Softball spent time training with Dr. Dave Ricciuti from Detachment-1, LLC to improve leadership, communication, respect, trust and reliance on each other on and off the field. Throughout this process, the Tar Heels developed their motto for the 2020 season: Want More.
"'Want More' is a start to creating a new standard for us," redshirt junior Kristina Burkhardt explained "No matter where we are or what we are doing, we want one more rep, one more base, one more at bat, etc. 'We didn't come this far to only come this far.'"
"It means to never be satisfied with where you are," junior Megan Dray said.
"'Want More' means to push beyond all expectations," sophomore Abby Settlemyre said. "As a team, we want to make history and go further than those before us. We 'want more' for our program, coaching staff and each other."
Each Tar Heels' explanation of "want more" follows the same themes of striving for excellence and being dissatisfied with the current situation. Each student-athlete committed to wanting more back in August, when they set foot on campus. With opening day in 32 days on Feb. 7, the Tar Heels hit the field Monday for the first time in 2020 to begin preparations for the season and continue to want more from each member of their program.
