Volleyball Travels to NC State for Final Road Trip of 2020

CHAPEL HILL – Wrapping up its final road trip of 2020, North Carolina (2-2) travels to NC State (0-2) for a pair of matches Friday and Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
The Tar Heels take on NC State Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can watch Friday's match on RSN and Sunday on ACCNX. Matches are not open to the public.
Last time vs. NC State
Coming down to the fifth set and trailing 3-8 at the half-way point, North Carolina fought its way to victory on a pair of five-point runs to defeat NC State, 15-12 in the set, and take the match, 3-2 for the Tar Heels first ACC win of the 2019 season on October 2, 2019 in Reynolds Coliseum.
After dropping the first set by the minimum, two points, the Tar Heels bounced back to take the second and third sets. UNC held the Wolfpack to a .000 attack percentage in the third set. NC State responded to take the fourth set and take an early lead in the fifth. However, Carolina showed its resiliency and earned its first five-set win of 2019. Skyy Howard led Carolina with 11 blocks while the Tar Heels posted 19.5 as a team.

Defending its home court, North Carolina topped No. 14 Duke in four sets on Friday night in Carmichael Arena to hand the Blue Devils their first loss of the season. Although Duke led 19-13 early in set one, the Tar Heels settled in to take the frame, 26-24, attacking at a .447 clip, before continuing on to the 3-1 win.
The Tar Heels balanced their offense between Amanda Phegley, Aziah Buckner and Parker Austin each with double-digit kills while Karenna Wurl grounded the back row with a career-best 24 digs. Freshmen Buckner and Maylen Mitrovich each recorded a double-double in the victory.
Despite 19 kills by Destiny Cox, North Carolina dropped a four-set match to the 14th-ranked Blue Devils on Sunday evening to wrap up the weekend. Attacking at a .438 clip to open the match, No. 14 Duke took the first set, 25-21. An 8-1 rally late in the second set paced Carolina to a 26-24 set two victory to knot the match at 1-1. However, the Blue Devils bounced back to win the final two sets in Carmichael Arena.
In addition to Cox's kills, both Buckner and Kaya Merkler tallied seven to highlight UNC's offense. Mitrovich paced Carolina with season-highs, 23 assists and 13 digs, for her third double-double in as many matches.

The Tar Heels look to reschedule their postponed matches with Virginia on a mutual bye weekend. The 2020-21 season will resume in January with the NCAA Championship in April.
