No. 1 Women's Soccer Blanks No. 4 Duke, 1-0
October 23, 2020 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – After a scoreless first half, No. 1 North Carolina took advantage of a Duke own-goal to defeat the No. 4 Blue Devils on Friday night at Dorrance Field.
In the early minutes, Brianna Pinto offered the Heels an early scoring chance but her strike was saved by the keeper. A back-and-forth game continued throughout the first half. The Tar Heels dominated in shots, recording seven to Duke's one in the first period.
UNC picked up momentum toward the end of the first half when Izzy Brown came off the bench and provided a spark, with four shots in the last 12 minutes. Despite Brown's attempts, for the first time this season, Carolina remained scoreless at halftime.
Duke started the second half with five early shots, but Claudia Dickey made two saves.
In the 63rd minute, Rachel Jones sent a cross through the box that was deflected into the net by a Duke defender to give the Tar Heels their first lead of the game. This was the second own-goal Carolina has taken advantage of this year with the first against Duke in September.
At the 85-minute mark, Jones attempted a shot that was blocked by the keeper. Both teams finished had seven shots in the second half, but Duke remained scoreless to give the Heels a 1-0 victory.
This game against No. 4 Duke, though not a conference game, marks the Tar Heels' third win over a top-ten team this season. The first two top-ten wins were against No. 7 Duke and No. 3 Clemson.
North Carolina returns to action Thursday (Oct. 28) at Louisville. The match is set to begin at 8 p.m. on the ACC Network.
