Gavin Kane Talks Coming To Carolina, Wrestling With Brother
October 29, 2020 | Wrestling
With UNC's freshman class in Chapel Hill this season, the Tar Heels now have three sets of brothers on the team. Gavin Kane, whose brother, Devin, was a Round-of-12 wrestler for Carolina in 2019, joins the team after winning four Georgia state titles.
Â
This week, he sat down with GoHeels.com to discuss joining the Carolina culture, wrestling with his brother and more.
Â
GoHeels: What is it like to wrestle at the collegiate level with your brother, Devin?
Â
Kane: Being able to wrestle on the same team as my brother is a dream come true. We haven't been on the same wrestling team since he was in fifth grade and I was in first. It brings back memories of him being a role model to me. Knowing we both have the experience to both wrestle at the college level is something I thought would never happen. He helps me every day with getting comfortable around the team and showing me what it takes to be competitive in college.
Â
GH: What does it mean have such a family-first culture, especially now that there are three sets of brothers in the program?
Â
GK: It's no coincidence we have multiple brothers on this team. The family atmosphere here is beyond any other team I have seen. Being the little brother, I didn't just want to follow my brother's footsteps; I wanted to make sure I find somewhere that feels like home to me and that's exactly what North Carolina does. We're all brothers and treat each other like family and that's not something you can force.
Â
GH: What are you most looking forward to as you look ahead to the upcoming season?
Â
GK: I'm looking forward to getting the season rolling and seeing what it's like to compete next to people who push you and make you a better person inside the room and outside. Being in Chapel Hill is what I've been looking forward to since I signed those papers. And having my brother be here only makes it feel more like home. I'm excited to get on the mat with him and show him his little brother isn't little anymore.
Â
GH: What has it been like to be in the room at Carolina and be around those in the program so far?
Â
GK: It's amazing finally being in a college room. Every single day you go to war with your teammates and make each other better by doing that. The coaches have been helping with so many things, like getting rid of my old high school habits that won't work at the college level. Surrounding yourself with teammates who want you to become the best wrestler possible changes the atmosphere in the room and just makes you want to work harder. We're ready to show other teams how much work we've put in this preseason once the matches start up.
Â
GH: What are your biggest goals for your first year in Chapel Hill?
Â
GK: Help the team start the year out with a bang and bring a positive attitude through everything. My goal is to transition to what college wrestling is really like and start to compete for a position as soon as possible and help everyone else around me do the same.
