Freshmen Lead The Way At WolfPack Invite

CARY, N.C. – The UNC women's cross country team took second and the men were third Wednesday in morning of racing at the Wolfpack Invite. The four-school meet at WakeMed Soccer Park included Duke and Virginia as well as host NC State.
For the second time in as many races, a pair of freshmen led the way for the Tar Heels. In the men's 8K race, which went off at 9:30 a.m., Will Coogan crossed first for Carolina, in 24:09.6, good for 10th place overall. In the women's 5K race, at 10:15, Sasha Neglia placed third overall in 17:29.5. She was the only freshman in the top nine spots.
After Coogan in the men's race was freshman Max DiMuccio, who placed 13th in 24.19.5. Junior John Tatter was 19th in 24:37.9. Virginia's Rohann Asfew won the race in 23:32.5, leading the Cavaliers to the team title as well.
In the women's race, which was a three-team field, NC State's Dominique Clairmonte won in 16:56.4, and her teammates took two of the next three spots to give the Wolfpack the win. UNC placed five runners in the top 14, with senior Emmeline Fisher in seventh, freshman Kelsey Harrington in 12th, freshman Taryn Parks in 13th and senior Mady Clahane in 14th.
The UNC women finished with 49 points, trailing NC State (24) and ahead of Virginia (59). On the men's side, Virginia tallied 28, NC State 31, UNC 79 and Duke 108.
Next up for UNC is a meet on Oct. 16 in Kernersville, N.C., against Wake Forest and NC State.
