Williams Added To Maxwell Award Watch List

SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. - North Carolina running back Javonte Williams has been added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the outstanding collegiate football player in America.
Williams, a junior from Wallace, N.C., leads the nation with 18 total touchdowns in 2020, including 15 on the ground and three more through the air. He sits second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 139.4 total scrimmage yards and 108.5 rushing yards per game.
He leads the country with 62 avoided tackles this season, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). The next closest player is 41 by Iowa State's Breece Hall. Williams tops the nation with 58 first downs as well.
Williams joins Carolina quarterback Sam Howell on the watch list.Â
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell.Â
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced on Monday November 30th and three finalists for each award will be announced Tuesday December 8th.. The winners of the 2020 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be announced in late December or early January at a date to be announced shortly.Â
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2020 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.
